DE OUDE KRAAL FINE DINING RESTAURANT

De Oude Kraal restaurant is in the original farmhouse with four meter high ceilings and wooden floors built in 1885 by a German missionary named Saltzmann, and added to by Judge A.J. Smit (Marie’s grandfather). The separate dining rooms have open fireplaces and original antique furniture, some dating back to the early 1900’s. As you walk through the old house you get to admire Gerhard and Marie’s stunning art collection, collected over the years.

Four Course Gourmet Meals

The four-course meal has become our principal meal, where the daily menu variations include a diversity of the season’s best foods. Marie and her team’s philosophy is that food must be prepared and presented with love.

“I have access to wonderful ingredients that arrive in our kitchen from different sources; bought at the fresh produce market by my daughter Marie-Louise, sourced at different suppliers or plainly from the local butcher. All the wonderful produce gets studied, smelled, touched, appreciated and respected before we start to transform them. Only then can they be approached with humility.” – Marie Lombard

Marie Lombard was born and raised on this 4th generation farm, and has formed a dedicated team from fourth generation farm workers.  The team skilfully combine Free State farm style cooking with a touch of French flair to create a variety of meals, such as the buffet breakfast, buffet lunch, freshly baked goods as well as four-course gourmet dinner.

TESTIMONIALS

Brilliant place for 40th wedding anniversary

Brilliant place for 40th wedding anniversary We stayed for one night in one of the luxury garden rooms. Private and spotless clean with a truly luxurious bathroom: his and her sink, bathrobes, double shower and jet soaking tub. There was even an outdoor shower. The afternoon complementary tea was a feast and Julius went the extra mile with boiling water and plunger coffee. But the cherry on top was the delightful 5- course dinner. What an extraordinary taste sensation! Each plate was so beautifully presented and the taste of every single course was out of this world. Best tomato soup ever and served in a modern way. The lamb's neck was tender and flavorful and the rosemary compliments it so well. The wine list was one of the most comprehensive we ever laid eyes on. The breakfast was buffet style with lovely fresh fruit, juices and piping hot cheese scones...

We literally booked this estate half an hour before arriving late evening. Nothing was too much trouble for them - our room was ready, we were warmly welcomed and they accommodated for their gastronomic dinner, even though I don't eat red meat and we were late. This is a farm which has been in the same family for over 100 years and because of this, is very special. The staff are extremely warm and friendly and the head chef (Marie-Louise) is the 6th generation daughter who takes her passion for cooking from her mother. All guests sit outside on the veranda with a beverage of choice whilst Mary-Louise provides an interesting historical account of the farm and runs through the dinner menu. They are very mindful of special dietary requirements. The food was hearty and delicious which is accompanied by a very good wine list. Our room was very well...
